The Balkans
The Balkans were a small cluster of countries between eastern Europe and the Middle East that included Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and Slovenia.
The Balkans were an important gateway region, so major European powers developed an interest in the area. In 1913-4 Serbian nationalist groups threatened Austro-Hungarian interests in the Balkans, further heightening tensions. |
