Primary Sources
Primary sources are evidence we have, to justify and explain WW1. For my topic; WW1 Enlistment and Volunteering, there is plenty of marketing propaganda that helps many understand WW1. Below is Australian propaganda.
This poster was meant to put the war into context. The illustrators
described the war as raging bush-fire that was spreading rapidly.
It convinced Australians that enlisting was the righteous thing to do
and not helping would be like not helping to put out a bush-fire.
This poster was released to make Australian men feel guilt.
Promises are a very sacred thing and not helping your country
keep a promise, would make someone feel very guilty. They could
be seen as failing their country and a coward.
This was convincing South Australians to 'go and help'.
The purpose of this poster was to make some feel
personally targeted and called some out for being lazy
and for standing around instead of helping fight.
This poster is implicating that the German's are spreading the war
to Australia. The gorilla/monster is clearly representing the Germans
because of the famously known pointed helmets, and the blood is
representing the war spreading off the monster's fingers. The big
question mark is there ask civilians what they are doing while this is
happening. This poster scared citizens into enlisting, it was threatening
Australian's that the war was coming to them.
This poster was to convince women to volunteer. The Red
Cross, established in August 1914, promotes their name by
stating that the Red Cross 'serves humanity'. The marketing
technique would be to appeal to women who feel like they
need to help their country but they can't officially help. Saying
that they 'serve humanity' proposes that with joining, women
can help humanity too.
